There is one very important purpose of diabetic shoes that all diabetics should understand as early on as possible. If you have diabetes then you probably have to closely monitor your blood sugar levels because when they increase the elevated levels of glucose in your blood will slowly damage your body over long periods of time.

Short spikes in blood sugar may not be a problem for most people but chronically high levels of blood sugar can result in damage to the blood vessels and nerves throughout your body. One of the prime areas that are affected by this damage is the legs and feet. Diabetic shoes are a means of protecting the feet from further damage which is the result of external causes.

Diabetic Shoes Protect The Feet

The two primary issues many diabetics have with heir feet are peripheral nerve damage and peripheral arterial damage. Basically chronically high levels of glucose and insulin cause the nerves in your feet to lose their sensation and cause the arteries and capillaries to shrink, close up, or flow inefficiently.

This is a very problematic mixture of issues because a lack of sensation in the feet makes it very easy for you to damage your foot. Blisters form without you realizing it. Scrapes or puncture wounds can occur without your knowledge. Pressure points can form and you wouldn’t even know. These problems are hardly serious to the normal foot because they are felt and dealt with immediately but in people with neuropathy they go unaddressed until the problem gets worse.

Ultimately it is the job of the circulatory system to keep the foot healthy. The blood stream carries white blood cells to the area to heal injuries and deliver medicine. Unfortunately for those people with arterial disease in their feet the healing process carried out by the blood stream is stymied. When injuries occur they become more difficult to treat and to heal.

Diabetic shoes will not only protect the feet from damage but will also help promote healthy circulation for better healing. This helps diabetics stay active and manage their blood sugar levels better and in the long run live healthier and more fulfilling lives.
